Washington, DC – Today, in response to the election of Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States, Oliver Merino, Coordinator for the Immigrant Justice Network, issued the following statement:
“Throughout the campaign trail, President-Elect Trump’s campaign centered on anti-immigrant rhetoric that made their hateful intentions clear: to pursue policies that would devastate immigrant communities across the country.
Trump’s previous term was marked by a slew of harmful policies aimed at demonizing immigrants and dismantling protections for our most vulnerable communities. From separating families at the border to enacting xenophobic travel bans, Donald Trump’s legacy of hate and fear-mongering left wounds on our country that we fear will only be reopened.
We stand firmly and foremost with the communities who will be directly targeted by the Trump administration. Now more than ever, we must support one another and continue our fight for justice and the dignity of all immigrants. While the road ahead will be challenging, we are determined to do whatever it takes to protect our communities and present a strong, united front against any attacks directed at immigrant, Black, brown, and Muslim communities in this country.”
